Gap টা কোথায়/Where is the catch

On Monday, 26th May 2025, an insightful session titled,” Gap টা কোথায়  “took place which focused on the gap between academic and tech industries hosted by AIUB Computer Club and referenced by Dr.Khandaker Tabin Hasan, Professor and Head[Graduate Program] of Department of Computer Science, AIUB. The guests were, Mr. Abhijit Bhowmik, Associate Professor and Special Assistant of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), Department of Computer Science, AIUB (Chief Guest), Noor-E-Fayzun Nahar, Head of Programs of IHF and Sefayetul Islam, Branch Manager of IFIC Bank (Bashundhara). It also featured Riyaz Ali, Project Manager of Qinetic Network, Muhammad Joy, Business Development Manager of  Edutechs and Tahmid Khan, Co-founder of BacharLorai. This session was facilitated with interaction and dialogue with professionals from multiple sectors, rewarding the discussion with a broad perspective on the tech industry. The session was held from 4 pm to 6 pm and highlighted the dilemma often faced by fresh graduates entering the tech industry, as the recruiter has a high demand for skills. Diving deep into the various sectors of the tech industry and corporate world, gave an insight into the skills needed to step into the tech world and build communication.

Firstly, Dr. Khandaker Tabin Hasan explained the purpose of the session and the significance of participating in this session, such as finding a new career path and developing new skills. Then he invited Mr. Abhijit Bhowmik to carry on the session.

Mr. Abhijit Bhowmik started advising students to attend more seminars, workshops, and competitions and communicate with industry people to identify their lack of skills. He explained the fundamental importance of finding a gap to make your skills exceptional in front of the recruiter. He gave a clear perspective on the overall problem.

Following that, Noor-E-Fayzun Nahar gave a brief introduction about her non-profit organization and how the tech industry is related to her organization. She heavily emphasized the implementation of knowledge, acquiring skills (Technical and soft skills) and adaptability of a student. Her organization offers internship, fellowship and volunteering opportunities for students to learn and communicate with professionals. Her dedication to uplifting the students to the right path was unwavering.

Then Mr. Sefayetul Islam began his speech with the history of his journey with the bank. He proceeded to talk about the transition from manual to digital work in the Bank.  Hence increasing the demand for IT experts in the Bank as they find the solutions to hardware, software and cyber security problems. Advice was given on pursuing an MBA and staying committed to one’s goals. A key point he mentioned was that IFIC Bank (Bashundhara) provides loans to entrepreneurs for a start-up and outlines the complete procedure. He gave an understanding of the part of the tech world.

Mr. Riyaz Ali introduced the idea of infusing technology into music and their organization. He invited all the creative minds to join in any creative sectors.

Mr. Muhammed Joy gave a curt description about edutechs which deals with learning management systems and their projects for example attendance device tracker and hotel management system. He offered a simple yet reassuring message to believe and trust that everything will fall into place.

Mr. Tahmid Khan talked about his non-profit initiative dedicated to helping the Bangladeshi diaspora community. He emphasized the importance of addressing gaps in resources and opportunities while fostering global connection.

The Q&A session was interactive with students engaging and raising important questions. One of the questions was about career transitions such as whether a Computer Science student could move into a management role, to which other experienced attendees highlighted that such a shift is not only possible but also valuable. The key point was to focus on identifying adaptable skills and seeking roles that align with personal interest, rather than being confined to academic background.

The session ended with Mr. Abhijit Bhowmik presenting some gifts to the guests to appreciate their presence. Some light snacks were also distributed to the attendees of this session. After that, guests and speakers took some photos as a token of memory. Overall, this session proved to be highly beneficial in identifying the gaps and exploring effective strategies to address them.
