On Thursday, 7th December 2023, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), OPA (Office of Placement & Alumni) and Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) successfully organized an online seminar on “CAREER PLANNING: MAP YOUR AMBITION” at 8.00PM via ZOOM meeting. The speaker of the seminar was Ms. Fatima Morium Nisha (Head of People, Culture and Diversity SMEC).
The seminar aimed to provide a brief session for passionate individuals who are entering the job market to give them guidance on career planning. Mr. R. Tareque Moudud FCMA (Director, Office of Placement & Alumni (OPA), AIUB) initially conducted the seminar and welcomed the honorable speaker. Ms. Fatima began the session by interacting with the audience by asking them what they want to do with their career. MS. Fatima provided insights on agendas like pathways to achieve your ambitions, how to do it, how to create the profile, enhance the chances, then get ready with the professional world. She talked on how crucial it is to make plans to build the career and identify the areas of interest early on. She then led the way through a map that began with the steps of exploring every field, selecting a skill that piqued interest, locating the root, and determining the routes leading to that objective. Ms. Fatima empathized with the importance of writing a resume and improving one’s LinkedIn presence. A resume should be information-rich but not overly wordy. In addition to showing the audience how to make a simple and clear resume that met the job description, she brought a sample resume that had multiple errors on it.
The speaker presented a general overview of 360° Job Requirement Automation, including how to create jobs, market requirements, manage applicants, screen candidates, shortlist and choose candidates, and handle onboarding. Ms. Fatima also discussed the significance of developing one’s professional network and skill set. She discussed the various types of interviews and the significance of exercising caution while providing information on applications Ms. Fatima spoke about how professionalism and adhering to the dress code are important aspects of interviews. Moreover, Ms. Fatima discussed asking follow-up questions and gave examples of questions that applicants should avoid asking, like those involving compensation, vacation time, work schedules, and hours worked.
The Q&A period that followed this portion was facilitated by Ms. Fatima, who discussed typical interview questions and candidate presentation strategies. Near the conclusion of the session, Abhijit Bhowmik, (An associate professor of computer science at AIUB and special assistant to the office of student affairs), joined in the session and gave everyone encouragement. Following his remarks, Mr. R. Tareque sir expressed gratitude to all those in attendance at the seminar as well as to the esteemed speaker. The nearly 90-person session successfully inspired and helped the attendees make career plans and enter the workforce with confidence.
